Program Description:

The mission of the MPH program in Community Health Education is to enhance the quality of human health through the practice of population-based public health education that is responsive to the dynamic, ecologically based, interdependent nature of human systems and the environment. ESU’s MPH program is guided by this core set of values. It is important for students, graduates and faculty members to:

  • Maintain a commitment to social justice and the elimination of health disparities through research, service and instruction,
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the growth of all members of our academic community,
  • Demonstrate a respect for and awareness of our growing multicultural society,
  • Demonstrate a commitment to preparedness,
  • Be responsive to the changing requirements of global health,
  • Work for the application and translation of research and theory into evidence-based public health practice,
  • Exemplify the importance of professional public health leadership, and
  • Serve the rural communities of Pennsylvania and the United States.

To achieve this mission while emphasizing our core values, the ESU MPH program strives to prepare members of the public health workforce with the competencies that support community based public health practice and community development.

We have a small program, with a high level of faculty availability and mentoring.
We require experiential learning and applied research of all students so that they are prepared to improve the health of communities when they enter or return to the workforce.
We welcome your inquiries into our program.

Program Description:

Southern Connecticut State University's nationally accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program is the ideal path for students who are concerned with the global and local issues that affect the health of individuals, neighborhoods, communities, and society.  Southern's curriculum in public health provides prospective and current public health workers with a strong general background in areas of knowledge basic to public health; (2) the opportunity to apply public health knowledge in independent research and in an internship; and (3) the option to pursue specialized study in Community Health Education (CHE). The CHE specialization focuses on developing the capacity to plan, administer and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention interventions and programs.

The MPH program is designed to prepare health and human service professionals who can provide leadership in public health.  There is a particular emphasis on preparing culturally diverse and culturally sensitive health care practitioners.  Thus, nearly 30 percent of the students in the program are people of color, many of them from countries other than the United States.

Part-time and full-time study cohorts are available for two- or three-year  programs of study with all courses available in the evening for the working student.  Southern's Master of Public Health is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
