University of Utah Public Health Program Department of Family & Prevention Medicine 375 Chipeta, Suite A Salt Lake City, UT 87108 (801) 587-3315 http://uuhsc.utah.edu/dfpm/phgroups/
Program Description/Overview:
The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (originally Family and Community Medicine) has offered Master's degree public health education since 1975, and began offering a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in 1989, a professional degree designed for individuals with prior health or public health experience. Since 1978 the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Public Health Program has undergone five accreditation reviews, the last concluded May 22, 2001.
In the past five years an average of 58 students have been admitted each year. As of June 2006 the Public Health Program had 752 graduates. Program coursework reflects current thought and expectations of public health practice. Faculty members are engaged in research covering a wide variety of public health concerns. This provides students with ample opportunities to refine their research skills.
Graduates are prepared to assume positions in which research, planning, management, and evaluation skills are required. Typically, these include state and local public health organizations, health care delivery systems, universities and medical schools, governmental health agencies, and industry. The MPH degree is appropriate for the student who plans a career in public health practice that does not necessarily involve research. No research project is required, and this degree program consists of 45 semester credit hours. The MPH degree is considered a professional degree and is offered for those who have prior experience in a health related field and a terminal degree, i.e., M.D., D.O., Ph.D. degrees. Potential applicants to the MPH Program should meet the following criteria:
-
The applicant should have experience in public health or in a public health-related field, as of the beginning of the first semester of enrollment.
-
The applicant has already earned a terminal degree.
